This article provides all the information you may want to know about access domains.

For the (gs) Grid-Service

The access domain is a unique hostname that is assigned to every (gs) Grid-Service. It will look something like this:

It will look like this:

  • s00000.gridserver.com
    • s stands for "site."
    • 00000 stands for your site number. This will be a unique number assigned to your account and server.
    • gridserver.com is the (gs) Grid-Service domain.

For the (ve) Server

Your access domain is a unique hostname that resolves to your server, regardless of whether any other domains have DNS pointing to the server.

It will look like this:

  • ve.4iU3hd92.vesrv.com

Find my access domain for my (gs) Grid-Service

  1. Sign into the AccountCenter.
  2. Click on your primary domain.

    AccountCenter welcome greeting

  3. Click on the Server Guide tool.

    AccountCenter Control Panel

  4. Your access domain is the first domain listed in the Domains section.

You can find your personal access domain in the AccountCenter.

  1. Sign into the AccountCenter.
  2. Your access domain should be listed on your Overview page when you first log in (unless you've removed it from your alternate domains). It will either be the primary domain shown in bold, or it will be listed underneath as an alternate domain.

  3. You can also view your access domain in the Server Guide. Click on your primary domain, then on Server Guide.

    Server Guide icon

  4. Your access domain is listed in the Server Info section:

As shown in the Server Guide

You can use your access domain for SSH:

ssh username@ve.4iU3hd92.vesrv.com

You can also use it for FTP, as a domain on your server, for email testing, etc.

Preview my site

Your access domain works as a preview domain for your primary domain. Just type http://s00000.gridserver.com in your favorite browser, and you'll see what you've uploaded so far! (Remember to replace 00000 with your personal site number.)

You can also use it for alternate domains - for example, alternate.com. In this case, you'll add the alternate domain name to the beginning of the URL, like this:

This is a great way to preview your site before you've pointed your domain to (mt) Media Temple.

See (mt) Media Temple's DNS/Nameserver information when you are ready to point your domain to (mt) Media Temple.

Email, FTP, and SSH

Your access domain will work in any situation where you need to connect to the server. Remember to replace 00000 in the examples with your personal site number!

  • You can use s00000.gridserver.com in your email program as the name for the incoming server and the outgoing server.
    • See Using Email for details on setting up email software.
  • You can use s00000.gridserver.com as the server name in your favorite FTP program.
  • You can use s00000.gridserver.com as both the username and the server name in SSH.
    • See this article for details on SSH - the command-line interface for your server.
