Using Dreamweaver for FTP/SFTP
Using visual aids, this article describes the creation of a new site in Dreamweaver MX, the creation of a homepage, and uploading to your hosting service.
Needed info for this article:
Host name: (gs - s#####.gridserver.com, ss - ss##.shared.server-system.net, dv - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
Username: (gs - serveradmin@mt-example.com, ss - mt-example.com, dv - username)
password: (********)
NOTE:
- You MUST set passive mode inside your FTP program. Failure to make this setting is the number one issue with FTP.
- Text in this color is used as an example. Please be sure to replace this text with the proper information for your site or server.

- Dreamweaver CS4 Only - In the "Remote Info" settings, after clicking the "Server Compatibility..." button, please deselect "Use FTP performance optimization".
DETAILS:
- Open your Dreamweaver MX software.
- Click the 'Site' menu, choose 'Manage Sites'.
- On the Manage Sites dialog, Click 'New > Site'.
- Choose the 'Advanced' tab, select 'Local Info', input a 'Site Name', choose a 'Local Root Folder', input the full 'HTTP Address' to your site.
- Select 'Remote Info', choose the 'Access' method as 'FTP', input your 'FTP Host', input your 'Host Directory'
- For (ss) Shared-Servers: /var/www/html
- For (gs) Grid-Services: /domains/mt-example.com/html/
- For (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Servers: httpdocs
TIP:
- input your 'Login', input your 'Password', check the "use passive FTP" box, and click 'OK'.
- Next you will want to create the first page of your website. Right click as shown below and choose 'New File'.
- Name the new file 'index.html' exactly.
- Right click on your newly created file and choose 'Open'. This allows you to edit the file so you can add content to it.
- In the design view, add content to your page. Next, 'Save' the file.
- Lastly, upload your new homepage (index.html) to your hosting service. Right click on your index.html file, choose 'Put'. This uploads your file to your hosting service.
- Now use a web browser to view your new homepage at http://www.mt-example.com/

- This article uses 'mt-example.com' as a example domain name only. Remember to replace this example domain name with the primary domain name of your hosting service. Additionally, if your domain name is newly registered or not yet resolving to your hosting service, you may optionally use your IP address instead of a domain name. The IP address of your hosting service was supplied to you in the "Service Activation Letter".
- This article uses 'serveradmin@mt-example.com' as a example login name only. Remember to replace this example login name with your specific site administrator name. The site administrator name of your hosting was supplied to you in the "Service Activation Letter".
- When viewing your homepage with a web browser, you may optionally use your domain name, or IP address. If your domain name is newly registered or not yet resolving to your hosting service, use your IP address instead of a domain name. The IP address of your hosting was supplied to you in the "Service Activation Letter". If you are on a (gs) Grid-Service, you can also use your Access Domain to view the site.
