Instructions for (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server 4.0, using WordPress as an example

READ ME FIRST

  • Please note that third-party software is not guaranteed to be compatible with your server, even if it is installed through the Application Vault.
  • The Application Vault does not allow you to install applications directly in your document root - you need to choose a subfolder. (Example: http://example.com/blog/). If you want to install your application in your document root, you will need to install it manually.

TIP:

If the screenshots you see here don't match your version of Plesk, please see the (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server 3.5 section. These screenshots are for the (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server 4.0 and Plesk 10.

  1. Log into the Plesk Control Panel for your domain. See Figure 1:

Figure 1. The Plesk Control Panel. Click for a larger view.

If you log into Plesk with the admin user, you will be in the Server Administration Panel by default. To get to the Control Panel, click on Domains, then on the Control Panel link next to your domain.

You can also create a user that will log into the Control Panel by default, which will save you a few clicks on day-to-day webmaster tasks. See (dv) 4.0:Control Panel user.

  2. Click on the Applications tab. See Figure 2:

Figure 2. Click on the Applications tab.

  3. You will see a list of popular applications to install. You can also click on the option to view all the available applications, on the left. See Figure 3:

Figure 3. A list of popular applications.

  4. In this example, we will install WordPress. Click on Install under the WordPress icon. Wait for the application to download. See Figure 4:

    Figure 4. Click Install.

  5. You will be prompted to read and accept the application license. If you agree, check the box, then click Next. See Figure 5:

Figure 5. The WordPress application license.

  6. Next, you will need to choose the domain and path for your installation, and to create a password and administrative email. Then, click Install. See Figure 6:

Figure 6. Choose your path, and enter a password and an email address.

    • Installation path: Pick your domain from the dropdown menu, and enter a subfolder for your blog. You won't be able to leave it empty. If you need to install the blog at your document root, you will need to install WordPress manually instead.
    • Password: This will be your WordPress Dashboard password. Please choose something strong.
    • Administrator's email: This will be your WordPress admin email.
  7. The application will finish installing. Then, you'll be taken to the application details page. See Figure 7:

Figure 7. Links to WordPress-related pages.

Here are a few of the most helpful links:

    • Settings button: Change your WordPress database username and password, your Dashboard username and password, blog title, et cetra.
    • Blog: View the blog.
    • Administrative interface: A link to the WordPress dashboard. Your username is admin by default.
  8. At any time, you can get back to this page by following Steps 1 and 2 above to access the Applications tab, then clicking on the Manage Installed Applications link, and then finally on the link for your application. See Figure 8:

Instructions

  1. First, you must go to www.apsstandard.com and find an application you wish to add to your server. Browsing the APS Application Catalog we found Magento, a popular e-commerce application. We will use Magento as an example app for this article, but these instructions will apply to any app. After you've located the application you wish to add to your server, click Download and save it to your computer.

    SaaS_Application_Packaging_Standard

  2. Once you've found and downloaded the APS package you want to add to your (dv), log into Plesk and go to Server > Application Vault. You will see a list of all currently installed packages on your server.

    Plesk_8.6.0

  3. Select Add New Application Distribution Package:

    Plesk_8.6.0_1

  4. On the next screen, select Choose File and browse for the file you downloaded and select OK:

    Plesk_8.6.0_2

  5. Allow for the package to upload to your server. This can take a few moments. The page will refresh when completed and you may now use Install a Site Application from your Plesk Desktop to set up the newly added application.

Following these simple steps, you can add more applications to use with your (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server. This approach has several benefits over manual installation:

    • Adding new applications is visual and easier to do.
    • You can use the same application vault package on multiple sites without having to upload the files each time.
    • Application configuration process is much easier.
    • Plesk includes the option of creating a custom button for the application for easy access from your control panel.

That's it! Enjoy your new application.
