How can I configure email in Apple Mail?

Overview

Apple Mail is the default email client that comes with every Mac using OS X 10.0 or later. This guide will show you how to configure your Apple Mail application to access email for your (mt) Media Temple server.

This is for the latest version of Apple Mail, version 5.0 on Lion OS 10.7. For older versions, please see our Community WikiCommunity Wiki.

Instructions

Let's begin!

  1. Open Mail.
  2. Enter your email account information, see Figure 1:

    • Full Name: Your name as you would like it to appear.
    • Email Address: Your full email address.
    • Password: The password you assigned to the email address.

    Click the Continue button when you're ready.

  3. Mail will attempt to contact the mail server. The default search uses "autodiscover.example.com" -- unless you have this subdomain already created and an SSL Certificate installed, this will fail. Click the Connect button to complete a manual set up. See Figure 2.

  4. In the next screen, enter your information. See Figure 3 below:

    • Account Type: From the menu, we recommend IMAP. To learn more, please see: Using Email: How IMAP worksUsing Email: How IMAP works.
    • Description: Enter a short description.
    • Incoming Mail Server: Your access domainUse your IP address or mail.yourdomain.com.
    • User Name: Your full email address.
    • Password: The password you assigned to the email address.

    Click the Continue button when you're ready.

  5. Next, we'll configure the Outgoing Mail Server, see Figure 4.

    • Description: Enter a short description.
    • Outgoing Mail Server: Your access domainUse your IP address or mail.yourdomain.com.
    • User Name: Your full email address.
    • Password: The password you assigned to the email address.

    Click the Continue button when you're ready.

  6. You will now have an Account Summary similar to Figure 5:

    Click the Create button when you're ready.

  7. That's it! You just configured your (mt) email address on Apple Mail. You are now brought to your inbox, see Figure 6.
