Creating an alternate domain

  • Applies to: (gs)

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Time needed: 5 minutes

  • Tools needed: None

What is an alternate domain?

On (mt) Media Temple services an alternate domain is simply an additional domain on your (mt) service. For example, your primary domain may be mt-example.com, but you can have an alternate domain of alt-example.com. An alternate domain will function as its own website, with email users, sub-domains, sub-ftp users, etc.

  • On the (gs) Grid-service an alternate domain will have its own directory at /domains/alt-example.com/html/
  • On the (ss) Shared-Server an alternate domain will have a directory at /var/www/html/alt-example.com/

Adding an alternate domain

  1. Login to your AccountCenter.
  2. Select Add New from the Domains drop-down menu.
  3. Type in your alternate domain name in the blank field, e.g. alt-example.com
    typedomain

    WARNING:

Do not include www when adding your alternate domain.  We will automatically create that entry in your zone file.

  4. Check the Add Domain to a new or existing service box:
    906_11
  5. Please choose your service, along with the IP Address listed in the drop-down menu:
    906_12
  6. If you receive the following error please check Yes, I want to add the domain after reading the message.  If you do not receive this warning just click next to finish.
    906_13
  7. You should now see your alternate domain listed on your service.
    906_14

NOTE:

  • It may take up to 15 minutes for your alternate domain's directory to be created.
  • Every alternate domain on the (gs) Grid-Service MUST have a html folder, e.g.
    /domains/alt-example.com/html/
  • In order for an alternate domain to display your name servers must be pointed to your service.

FAQ'S

How can I view statistics for my alternate domain?

  • Access to statistics (Urchin web stats) for the primary domain and all alternate domains are compiled into one log file which may distort the clarity of web reports. If you wish to have unique Urchin reporting for an alternate domain you will need to open a new (gs) Grid-Service for that domain.

How can I preview my alternate domain without DNS pointing to my (gs) Grid-Service?

  • You can preview an alternate domain via your access domain at http://alt-example.com.s#####.gridserver.com

I want my alternate domain to just point to another domain on my service. How do I do this?

  • You can follow the steps outlined here.
