FAQ: Domain Registration pricing change
(mt) Media Temple has offered domain registrations as a service for more than a decade. While we act as the service provider, the actual registrations are not conducted by (mt) Media Temple, but rather by our affiliated registrar, Tucows. Recent changes to our registration system have necessitated a price increase for several Top-Level Domains (TLDs) and other services offered for domain registration, as of September 2013.
What is changing?
- The annual renewal fee for certain Top-Level Domains (.biz, .name, .co, and .me) will increase.
- Our most popular TLDs (.com, .net, .org, and .info) will not change in price.
This chart details the new pricing structure for Domain Registration services:
|TLD||Old Price (Annual)||New Price (Annual)|
When will this change take effect?
Registration pricing changes will take effect in September of 2013. However, charges will not be assessed until the next annual renewal of your domain(s), and will be assessed on a per-renewal basis.
Why is this happening?
(mt) Media Temple has striven to keep our prices consistent for services in the past. However, this led to some prices being set below the cost of the actual fees we pay for registration, necessitating this change.
Has (mt) Media Temple changed its prices before?
(mt) Media Temple is committed to fair pricing for our services. Although we have endeavored to keep prices low and stable whenever possible, we occasionally need to change our pricing structure to match industry standards or to reflect our actual costs; often, we will lower prices rather than raise them. In fact, our most recent change to domain registration pricing lowered annual costs from $15.00 to $12.00.
What if I don't want to keep my domain registered?
You can close a domain registration service through the Request to Close tool in the AccountCenter. The domain will expire and be deleted from the registrar system after the next renewal date.
How do I to transfer my domain to or from (mt) Media Temple?
You are welcome to transfer your domain between registrars as long as it meets the transfer criteria: it must be unlocked, have WHOIS privacy disabled, show a valid administrative email address, and have not registered or renewed within the past 60 days. We strongly recommend completing transfer at least two weeks prior to a domain's renewal to ensure a seamless transfer of service.
What if I transfer my domain away before the renewal date?
If you are transferring your domain to another registrar, you will not be impacted by the price increase for what would be your next renewal. However, because our billing system assesses domain renewal charges a month in advance, we strongly advise completing transfer and submitting a Request to Close around the sixty-day mark prior to your renewal. Should you receive a charge for a domain which has already transferred to another registrar, please contact our support team for assistance. We will be happy to help!
